Iran Welcomes Development of Ties with Brunei

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday expressed optimism that the country’s economic relations with Brunei would further expand after the termination of “cruel” sanctions imposed by the West against the Islamic Republic.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes further cooperation with Brunei in all arenas,” President Rouhani said in a Sunday meeting with the new ambassador of the Southeast Asian sultanate to Iran, Pengiran Abdul Samad bin Pengiran Haji Metasan.

He also emphasized that given the two countries’ numerous capacities and commonalities, the current level of cooperation between the two sides is not “acceptable”.

Rouhani expressed the hope that during the new ambassador’s tenure, Tehran and Bandar Seri Begawan would boost cooperation in various areas of economy, science, culture, tourism, and health care services.

He also hailed the idea of a visit by Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to Iran and said the trip can further deepen relations between the two Muslim nations.

The new envoy, for his part, said Sultan Bolkiah is willing to visit Iran at the earliest in a bid to explore ways to promote bilateral relations.

During the meeting, the ambassador also submitted his credentials to the Iranian president.
