Two men were killed and two officers wounded Monday afternoon in a shootout outside a Target store in US state of California's Monterey County, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 2:45 pm in the Sand City Target parking lot in the 20400 block of California Avenue, when officers confronted two people with outstanding warrants, said Sand City police Chief Brian Ferrante.
Both officers were hit by gunfire; they are hospitalized in stable condition, Ferrante said. The suspects the officers confronted were both killed in the gun battle, he said, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Police did not reveal any other details about who the suspects were or what the warrants were for.
"Obviously its a tragic situation. We're concerned for our officers and the families of the people who were killed," the chief said.
