The Swedish prosecutor's office has filed a request with the state prosecutor's office in Ecuador for permission to question the WikiLeaks whistleblowing website founder, Julian Assange, at the Ecuador Embassy in London, Swedish prosecutors said in a statement Wednesday.

"The prosecutor has sent a request to question Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The letter has recently been sent from the Ministry of Justice to the public prosecutor's office in Ecuador. It is hard to say when a reply will be received," the statement reads, according to Sputnik News.

Assange launched the WikiLeaks website in 2006. He has been residing at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012, out of fear of being extradited to the United States where he could face espionage charges for publishing secret documents through his website.
