Army's Counterterrorism Push Gains Momentum across Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allied forces continued to make gains against terrorist groups across the Arab country, inflicting major losses on them.

Syrian forces on Friday launched several mop-up operations in the neighborhoods of al-Zibdiya, al-Mashhad, Salah Eddin and al-Ansari in the eastern part of Aleppo to fully clear the areas of the remnants of Takfiri militants, Syria’s official news agency, SANA, reported.

In a statement on Thursday, Syria’s General Command of the Army and Armed Forces said the Arab country’s forces have returned security and stability to Aleppo.

On December 15, Syria had announced the liberation of Aleppo, with President Bashar al-Assad praising the victory as “history in the making and worthy of more than the word ‘congratulations’.”

The Syrian security forces encircled Aleppo on July 17 after closing off the last terrorist-controlled route into the city.

In a separate development, the army troops repelled a major attack by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) in Jeb al-Jarrah, in the central province of Homs, killing and injuring large groups of them.

Moreover, the Syrian government forces targeted hideouts of the Takfiri Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, in Beir al-Sheiyah, al-Ghariye, Tariq al-Sad, and al-Nazihin Camp in the country's southwestern city of Dara'a.

ِDozens of the terrorists lost their lives in the process of the operations.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
