Not in Hands of Trump to Terminate JCPOA, Mogherini Says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said the 2015 nuclear deal is “working”, stressing that the United States cannot unilaterally cancel the international agreement.

“We cannot afford as the international community to dismantle a nuclear agreement that is working,” Mogherini told reporters on Friday after Trump officially announced he would not certify the deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Reuters reported.

"It is clearly not in the hands of any president of any country in the world to terminate an agreement of this sort. The president of the United States has many powers (but) not this one," the EU foreign policy chief pointed out.

“This deal is not a bilateral agreement ... The international community, and the European Union with it, has clearly indicated that the deal is, and will, continue to be in place,” she added.

Speaking from the White House on Friday, Trump said he will choose not to certify that Tehran is complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers (the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany) known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He said that the new policy is aimed at preventing what he claimed Iran’s effort to obtain a nuclear weapon.

In response,  Iran's President Hassan Rouhani on Friday blasted the anti-Iran comments made by the US president, reiterating that the Iranian nation will not surrender to such “false statements and hate speech”.
