Russia Says US Sanctions on Syria Illegitimate

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said the US unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria and the so-called “Caesar Act” are illegitimate, and they hinder the international efforts for resolving the crisis in the country.

“We consider these measures totally illegal and illegitimate … We will continue to help the Syrian people,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Presidential Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov told Sputnik.

Bogdanov added, “Our tasks remain the same… combating terrorism on the Syrian territory…Multifaceted cooperation will continue between our two countries, including the military field, and no one can prevent us from doing so.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Vladimir Jabbarov stressed that Russia will continue to support Syria despite the so-called “Caesar Act”.

Jabbarov expressed conviction that the US sanctions are “futile and useless” and will achieve nothing.

On Wednesday, the US State Department and the Treasury said 39 Syrian individuals, including President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, had been designated for a load of new economic and travel sanctions.

The law, known as the Caesar Act, places anyone who does business with the 39 named individuals and government entities in the cross hairs of the US Treasury.
