In a statement on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei expressed deep sympathy to the Afghan people, particularly the families of victims of the fatal earthquake in eastern parts of the neighboring country.

He also expressed Iran’s readiness to assist the Afghan government in rescue and relief operations.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocked eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday, August 31, killing hundreds of people and injuring many more.

The temblor struck in Afghanistan's Kunar province, east of Jalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, near the border with Pakistan.

At least 622 people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured in the disaster, a spokesperson for the Taliban-run interior ministry said.
