Speaking at a weekly press conference on Sunday, Esmaeil Baqaei referred to the US president’s recent remarks, saying the US has shown in practice that it is not serious about negotiations.
The spokesman stated that Washington either lacked a proper understanding of what negotiations entail or approached talks with a mindset that reduced them to dictation, adding that such claims should be measured against the US’ actions in practice.
Commenting on Iran’s conditions for any talks with the US, Baqaei emphasized that safeguarding Iran’s interests remained the central principle guiding Tehran.
The other side showed no genuine belief in negotiations, he said, noting that as long as negotiation was treated as imposition, conditions for real talks would not exist.
“What matters is that the US government has left no basis for trust due to its performance,” Baqaei said, adding that Washington withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 and later, despite progress during the Biden term, acted unfaithfully.
He argued that the US’ move to accompany the Zionist regime in the military aggression against Iran in June further demonstrated its lack of intent to reach a reasonable and fair solution.
The spokesman further dismissed speculation that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi’s upcoming trip to the Netherlands will include negotiations with the three European countries, making it clear that the purpose of the visit will be solely participation in the OPCW conference.
Baqaei explained that consultations with other ministers may occur in The Hague, but reports of negotiations with the European troika were untrue.
